A few reasons...
-portions are usually a little larger at dinner
-the linens are usually better quality at night (linen vs. paper), so it costs the restuarant more money
-it is busier so there are more staff members thus more overhead
-people spend more time at dinner thus a lower turnover of tables than at lunch... the owner has to compensate for the loss in revenue

The reason I think that the dinner menu is more expensive is because there are more people at dinner so the restaurants can make more money. What usually happens is one of the family members will go there for lunch and enjoy it so much that they recommend it to family. That's where the restaurants make their money.

The portion size is typically larger on the dinner menu.

Mainly because people are in school and at work during lunch time. So the restaurants have to lower prices to try to get what customers they can. At dinner time.. most people are home... And can go out to eat, Whereas lunch your limited to one hour.

I think that the older people eat out at lunch, and the eat smaller portions. It is geared more toward them than the business class and the younger set.

It's usually not the same portion size....Therefore it's more expensive at dinner time because there is more of the food.

well the real reason is the portion size is slightly larger. but from an economics outlook its willingness to pay. at night more people are out on a date so they are willing to pay more for the meal as they are enjoying it more.

Probably because more people eat out at dinner time. Higher demand means paying more.
